Lejano Game Board
Our Lejano game boards are handmade from contrasting hardwoods, carefully assembled to maintain a uniform grain, which minimizes damage from natural wood movement. The boards are roughly 9.5” (23.5cm) square, and 5/8” (17mm) thick. Each of the boards in this collection is unique, with its own quirks and flavor.
These game boards are finished like all of our wood products, with a food-safe mix of mineral oil and beeswax. The finish should be renewed from time to time, just as you would with any hardwood cutting board.
Boards in this collection include:
Manco, The Outcast
Manco is a unique blonde board featuring canarywood squares with a maple border. He is an adventurer seeking the heart of an innocent stranger, a solitary figure of the high desert, and by far the most striking of our first set of Lejano boards.
Woods: Canarywood and Maple
Price: $195
Ozzel, the Wanderer
Ozzel travels the lowlands in search of adventure, as this oak-and-walnut Lejano board with counterchanged grain. Made from two boards of magnificent white oak, the squares in this unique Lejano board have alternating grain patterns, like a checkerboard of woodgrains.
Woods: White Oak and Walnut
Price: $185
Paige, the Ranger
Paige is a stalwart hero of the forest, made from walnut and handsomely figured red oak. Her board squares feature just a hint of the “tiger” pattern found famously in quarter-sawn red oak.
Woods: Red Oak and Walnut
Price: $165
Parker, the Alchemist
Parker is a friend to all flora and fauna, who celebrates the changing of the seasons as a beautiful cherry and walnut board. Shot through with a few dark hairlines, the cherry in this board is smooth and warm, and should darken with age.
Woods: Cherry and Walnut
Price: $155
Serenity, the Princess
The secret lost sister of Starkey, Serenity is another Lejano board made from maple and walnut. The figure in her board spaces is lovingly matched, with an eye-catching chatoyance.
Woods: Maple and Walnut
Price: $175
Starkey, The Rebel
Starkey is a bold and fearless adventurer, made from scraps of maple and walnut. He has a bit of character on one edge piece, where two scraps of the walnut were joined (shown in the closeup). That bit shows only on one side, and Starkey is nevertheless a handsome boy.
Woods: Maple and Walnut
Price: $135
Walter, the Storyteller
Walter is a dark-on-light board, featuring squares of walnut, and borders of medium red oak. Each column is carefully grain-matched, for a handsome continuity in the walnut, just like the tales that Walter spins on a sunny summer evening. Walter is slightly smaller than the other boards in this set, measuring just 9” (23cm) across.
Woods: Walnut and Red Oak
Price: $175
About the Name: Lejano is a port city in Carrisor, on the northwestern corner of the Sierin Peninsula, the capital of the Almorran region, located on the Bisia at the mouth of the Rio Serafin. Almorran is known for its temperate climate and lush vineyards, and produces the finest wine in western Carrisor. You can see the map of Sierin in Ten Cards Up, a short story at the Library.
Compared to the rest of Sierin, Almorran endures long cold winter nights, a perfect setting for games by the fireside. Local favorites include Jardin, Pontes, and El Oso, all played on their signature style of 5x5 board. The Lejano game board features 25 uniform squares, separated by lines of a contrasting color.
These boards are also perfect for Tak and many other well-known abstract games.
