Spree: 2026 Edition

Springtime. Midnight. The Mall is beckoning.

Welcome to LeGrand Mall, the oldest and most poorly secured shopping mall in the world. It’s as leakproof as the Titanic and as solid as a wet paper bag. This place just begs to be robbed.

Enter you. And your infantile collection of friends.

It’s not enough to simply loot this mall. You have to do it with “flair.” Which boils down to an all-night looting race with shopping carts, flashlights, and guns.

So park your car, dash into the mall, and load up your little red wagon. You can snitch stuff out of the stores if you like, but it’s even more fun to steal it from your friends.

This explains the guns.

Spree! is a classic Cheapass romp, first released in 1996. This is the Pearl Anniversary Edition, featuring a fresh, colorful board and updated rules sheet.

  • Players: 3 to 8

  • Playing Time: 60 minutes

Along with the board, below, you’ll also need two poker decks with jokers, two 6-sided dice, two pawns for each player (a shopper and a car), and a way to keep score.

Summary: Each turn, players roll dice to move, then sprint through the mall grabbing whatever they can. Your hand is your shopping list, and whatever you pass over, you can grab. But your shopping cart isn’t safe; other players can shoot you and grab everything, until you lock it safe in your car.

Will you waste time locking down your loot, or spend a few more turns running around the mall? The first player to reach the target score wins the game and takes home the real prize, the honor of “greatest midnight shopper.” Or something to that effect.

History: The first edition of Spree! was released in 1996 along with five other Cheapass Games that included Kill Doctor Lucky, Before I Kill You Mister Spy, Ben Hvrt, Get Out, and Bleeding Sherwood.

The first edition was illustrated by Phil Foglio. In 1997 we released a second version, “Hong Kong Spree,” illustrated by Toivo Rovainen, featuring some extra-violence options. These two editions came together in later drafts, the latest of which was a free PDF version in 2011.

We have updated and colored the art and board for this edition, and revised the rules into a sharp new format. Or at least, that’s the plan. Today we are just building this page to have somewhere to put everything.
