Witch Trial was one of the original Cheapass Games, #031.

  • Release Year: 2001

  • Game Type: Card Game

  • Designer: James Ernest

  • Artist: Charles Dana Gibson

  • Players: 3 to 7

  • Playing Time: 90 Minutes

  • Components to Print: Board, Cards, Rules

  • You Also Need: One counter, two 6-sided dice, and money

You and your colleagues represent lawyers, defending and prosecuting an assortment of men and women who have been accused of witchcraft, and various other crimes against the fragile new nation called the United States.

Honestly, this game doesn’t know what period it is set in; it sounds sort of like being a lawyer during the Salem Witch Trials, but the art by Charles Dana Gibson places it about two hundred years later. So, whatever. Don’t think about it too much.

Witch Trial pits lawyers against each other in a courtroom battle for “prestige,” which is conveniently represented by money. You will build cases by combining suspects and charges, and then argue their merits with evidence, witnesses, motions, and more.

One of our players once commented that this game was more like civil law than criminal law. We’ll take it as a compliment that the game resembles any kind of law at all.

Also, the preamble to these rules is the greatest in any Cheapass Games rulebook, hands down.

Crab Fragment now offers both the original and an updated full-color version of Witch Trial, linked below and also at the game’s main product page.

We made a very slight upgrade to these rules (and with much prettier cards) in a web-only PDF in 2011, so you should definitely check that out. But this original format PDF of Witch Trial is also yours to print, play, and enjoy!
