The Harvest

The Harvest is now in available for sale! It’s a unique strategy card game with an unusual change-making engine. Players take turns activating their cards, sending their allies out to attack their enemies, and trying to reduce their opponents’ health to zero. You can print your own copy of The Harvest using the files below, or order the deck from our friends at DriveThruCards.

The Harvest is a game of crime and politics in historic Selaria, Mississippi, better known as Fight City. You need the 36-card deck, below, and some chips for keeping score. Our DriveThruCards version includes paper money for keeping score, enough for two players.

The Harvest is a surprisingly compact game. The game begins with only nine cards in play, all faceup, and players must be clever to see all the options and plan the best path to victory.

The Harvest is now complete and ready for sale, though we still expect to create expansions and new versions in the future. And if we’re lucky, a real game publisher might someday want to buy it!

A note on making double-sided cards: The best way to make your own copy of The Harvest is to use transparent card sleeves, printing each sheet of cards single-sided, and cutting the cards to fit. Watch a how-to video here. We have posted the deck in two versions of layout: “standard” format (this is the way we do it) and duplex format, for players who prefer to print on both sides of the same sheet.

Note also that the artwork in the print-and-play version is different from the DriveThruCards version. We chose a lighter-weight art style to eat up less ink in your home printer!

Summary:

Players start with 21 health points, and the goal is to drive your opponent’s health to zero.

Each card has a value between 1 and 6 on the front, and another value on the back. The 36 cards represent all combinations of the numbers 1 through 6, front and back. Each card also has an ability on the front, and a reset cost on the back.

Players start with hands of three, with three more cards in the middle, called The Street. This setup can be random, or it can be chosen in an opening draft.

On each turn, you may either activate a card in your hand or in the Street; attack with a card in your hand; reset a card in your hand; or buy the top card of the deck.

When a player takes damage, such as from an attack, they may prevent some or all of the damage by moving cards from the Street into the attacking player’s hand. But they can only give change up to the value of the attack, with certain restrictions on answering one card with one card. The value of damage prevention depends on what cards are in the Street, and what cards the defender is willing to pass.

The core rules are for 2 players, but rules for 3-5 players are also included.

We are really happy with The Harvest, and we hope will you enjoy playing it with us! Try the game today, and let us know what you think!
